Counselling and EMDR
in York and North Yorkshire
(Telephone, Online or Face-to-Face when this becomes appropriate)
Our first telephone consultation to chat about how we might work together, and to fix our first appointment, is completely free of charge and should take about 15 minutes. After that, consultation fees are £50 per ‘hour’ (50 minutes face to face and 10 minutes note-taking afterwards).
Special rates apply for EMDR sessions as these may be longer.
A Word about Covid-19…
Wouldn’t we all like to be as free as this bird right now? Unfortunately we’re not quite there yet.
Having faced isolation, loneliness, fear and possibly life-threatening illness, bereavement, loss of livelihood or income it is likely that for many these could trigger the effects of previous losses in our lives – deaths of loved ones, divorce, abandonment, and such like.
If you would like to chat through some issues like these, or anything else that is affecting you at this time, then do get in touch. Obviously normally I would be able to see people face to face. But it is not safe to do that just now. So we can find other ways using online means if you have a computer or smart phone/device; or just simply by telephone. Please note that I offer EMDR when we are able to meet in person, not online.
Nothing is too unimportant to discuss, if it is affecting how you are feeling just now. I won’t judge you. Just scroll down to the ‘Get In Touch’ section below, and fill in the details and I will give you a call. With warm wishes, Lin
I am a fully-qualified experienced Registered Counsellor/Psychotherapist, being an Accredited Member of BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) with a First Class Honours degree in Counselling Studies from the University of Leeds.
In my personal life, I am a Yorkshire woman who values the simple things in life, seeks to live life intentionally, and for fun (ha!) follows the varying fortunes of York City FC.
I started Counselling for Cruse Bereavement Care in 1995, and later became a Supervisor for them. Since my degree in 2003 I have worked in a Hospice, Christian Counselling Centre, General Counselling Centre doing GP referrals, and latterly as an independent Therapist.
What is Therapy?
Counselling or Talking Therapy is a professional intentional time of working together with an agreed focus and goal. We will work collaboratively and talk about possibilities together, rather than me telling you what to do, though I can offer guidance and ideas to help you. We will plan dates and times to meet in advance, usually in blocks of 8 sessions, which can be extended if required.
Payment is made by internet bank transfers 3 days before our meeting, or by cheque into my bank account 5 days before. If you wish to pay for a block of 8 meetings in advance, this will attract a discount of 10%. At the moment I have frozen my fees to help those struggling financially post-Covid. I also offer a bursary scheme you may wish to contribute to, aimed at helping those who otherwise would not be able to afford professional counselling in this way.
How can I help?
I have worked with a wide range of presenting issues such as Physical Abuse, Sexual Abuse, Anxiety, Phobias, Bereavement and other losses, Child Related Issues, Depression, Low Self-Confidence, Low Self-Esteem, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Relationship Issues, Stress, Suicidal Thoughts, Trauma, Spiritual issues and many more besides.
When we work together you will find that I work collaboratively with you to identify a way forward together, listening to who you are and what you would like to achieve and change in your life. I regard clients as people, not patients, and prefer not to ‘label’ people. Life can be difficult and complicated, and much of what I help with is a direct result of that.
I am a trained EMDR therapist, and this stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It is a treatment that has been recognised by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and the World Health Organisation as a treatment of choice for post-traumatic stress disorder. But there is also a growing body of evidence that it is helpful in wider mental health difficulties such as anxiety, depression and phobia.
This photo sums up life I think – dark storm clouds can threaten to overwhelm, but there is hope and an illuminated way forward, and (if you look carefully in the bottom right) guiding posts (or waymarks) to help guide the way ahead, and my job is to help us find those waymarks and when the tide is low enough, to start to make the journey forward.
Beyond Counselling – Anam Cara
The term ‘Anam Cara’ simply means Friend of the Soul. Once counselling has ended, it can be really useful to have a good look at how you are choosing to live your life generally, and whether this is satisfying for you right now.
Doing this can be useful for us all, whether we have had counselling or not.
Paying attention to the essence of what makes you ‘you’ can be very helpful in maintaining a positive view both of yourself and life in general, and can feel uplifting and rewarding. I can help you to reflect on how you would like to live out your life, so it fits with your values and personality, and identify the things within it that you would like to prioritise. Initially we would meet fortnightly to do the preparation and then every month or two to touch base. If you’d like to discuss this further, please fill in your details below and put ‘Anam Cara’ into the message box.
